finding tunes and talent

There are various streaming platforms and different ways to discover new songs. Whether you use Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, or another platform, the world is your oyster when it comes to discovering artists and music.

I’m excited to share my favorite ways to hear fresh sounds and rhythms! Enjoy:

  1. SPOTIFY DAYLIST — I’ve been loving the Spotify Daylist feature, which launched in September 2023. It feels like Spotify knows us so well at this point that they can just create and update playlist for you frequently depending on what you tend to listen to during different times of the day. The Daylist updates every 3 hours and refreshes with a new title and list of 50 songs that match your vibe and mood perfectly.

  2. SOUNDCLOUD RELATED TRACKS — A useful feature on SoundCloud is their ‘related tracks’ automatic playlist creation, updated every hour or so. If you like a song on SoundCloud, they will create a playlist specifically tailored to your music taste based on the songs you have listened to and liked recently. This is a fun way to find underground artists and tracks, similarly to Spotify’s automatic playlists.

  3. BEATPORT — Specifically for dance music fans, Beatport is the most reliable way to find the top current tracks that DJs are releasing and playing all over the world. I’m a huge fan of their genres category because you can dive into subgenres and find the most up to date songs under each of them. It’s also free to view the lists online so you don’t need an account to browse around!

  4. CONCERTS AND LIVE EVENTS — If you can make it out to a live music event, go! Not only do you get to hear unique performances and share memorable moments with peers, friends, family, and strangers, but you’re also able to discover new songs and styles that you may not have explored otherwise. You could always try to use Shazam if you hear a song you enjoy as well (although not always reliable).

  5. SETS ON YOUTUBE OR SOUNDCLOUD — Quite frequently, artists release recordings of their live performances either on YouTube or SoundCloud to be watched for free later. Look up your favorite artist or someone you just discovered and listen to one of their sets to hear their own original music as well as other music they play. Take a peek at the comments and you might even be able to find out which songs they played!
